Description
Already hailed as one of the decade's top live performers, Amy gives us fair warning with the devilishly titled I Told You I Was Trouble. The DVD features as its centerpiece a rollicking and emotive 60 minute concert performance filmed live from London's 104 year old Sheperd's Bush Empire. For Amy Winehouse fans, I Told You I Was Trouble also serves up a potpourri of bonus material including a 50 minute film chronicling her incredible rise as one of music's most colorful and acclaimed new voices; never-before-seen early performances; an interview with her father, and other rare, behind the scenes glimpses of the British siren. Showcasing her hit songs from her UK debut release Frank and the international platinum-plus release Back To Black (recently passing the 3 million sales milestone worldwide), the concert from Sheperd's Bush features "You Know I'm No Good," "Tears Dry On Their Own", Amy's cover of the Zuton's "Valerie", and her Billboard topping hit "Rehab," among others.

Amy Winehouse scored a UK hit with 2003's Frank, but her follow-up is another story. Released in 2007, Back to Black blew up worldwide. So, the bouffant belter took her soulful show on the road. It turned out to be a short trip; after only a few dates, she canceled her North American tour due to "severe exhaustion." Fortunately, I Told You I Was Trouble captures the petite powerhouse before personal problems sidelined her for the rest of the year. Recorded live at London's Shepherd's Bush, Winehouse and nine-piece ensemble, including two smooth-moving back-up singers, blast through 13 originals and four covers, including the Zutons' "Valerie" and the Specials' "Hey Little Rich Girl." Vivacious voice aside, Winehouse looks uncomfortable at times, alternately awkward and endearing. Yes, she drinks, but insecurity appears to be as much to blame as (possible) inebriation, though she does loosen up after awhile. And there's some good stuff here, especially the Ronettes-inspired "Back to Black" and "Rehab." As her albums attest, Winehouse is one of the decade's most electrifying artists, but the stage may not be the best showcase for her abilities--not yet, at any rate. While I Told You I Was Trouble isn't the triumph it could've been, it isn't a train wreck either. The informative 50-minute documentary features interviews with Winehouse, her proud papa, and the A&R representative who signed her to Island Records. One of the lady?s more interesting revelations: "The more insecure I get, the bigger my hair has to be." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars New Fan   November 2, 2008
Her reputation got my attention before I even knew of her music. One day I just got tired of hearing what a "bad" "girl" she was and set out to find out did she have talent to go with the bad rep.

I was impressed. I love her style. She reminds me of a cross between Macy Gray, and Sade. She has that different vocal style like Macy's, and her onstage performance reminds me of Sade, though she has a while to go before I would consider her to be "up there" with Sade.

And I must say, I've never seen a performer wet their throat as often as she did in this performance, but even so, I loved this concert and her version of "Love is Loosing Game" is the best that I've heard on her other recordings. I bought the single with the different versions of that particular song, but the one from this concert was not on it and I was disappointed. I really enjoyed the entire performance and I've watched and listened to it many times.

I loved her band. Each musician is highly talented. Watching each of them was as pleasurable as watching Amy Winehouse.

If she can manage not to be derailed by alcohol and drugs, I look forward to hearing more from her.

We had originally taped a performance Amy did on MTVHD, which was part of what this DVD was in total. She was fabulous and we certainly enjoyed it.

I cannot get enough of Amy Winehouse. Thank you for sending this DVD so quickly. It is a wonderful DVD. I absolutely LOVE Amy's brutely honest ways.It would be nice if everyone would be so honest.

Okay. The concert's not bad, if you don't mind unintelligible English, even when Ms. Winehouse is talking, not singing. If ever a video cried out for subtitles, its this one. The documentary has them, but the concert does not. And, yes, as "Back to Black" proved, Winehouse is a British blue-eyed soul talent in the mold of - if not necessarily the level of - a Dusty Springfield. She has talent and promise. But, she is pathetically out of control in the concert, drunk and drunker throughout the evening, and possibly, stoned as well. I don't want to seem holier-than-thou, but when I see teens singing "No, No, No" to rehab to a person clearly in need of just that - when I see that it was actually her enabling cab driver Dad who inspired that refrain, when I see the music industry types, featured in the doc, who apparently only care about wnat the singer can do for the label.... well, it's off-putting to say the least. So, talent aside, it's just too painful to watch someone self-destruct before one's eyes. If this concert existed in a vacuum, I'd give it 5 stars. But it doesn't. So, a somewhat generous 3 stars for a disquieting disc that will remain in my seldom played collection. I hope Amy Winehouse comes out of this phase, and fulfills her talent in the future.
