A GREAT BUDGET $ CD FOR ANY NEW TAJ FAN OR BLUES FAN! October 28, 2003 Yes there are just 10 tunes on this CD but they are the classic Taj from his CBS days. For lil' $ you get a get introduction to this legendary blues cat. From here, go onto the rest of his catalog. HE IS THE REAL THING! A+
You can hear screams for remastering! January 29, 2003 A masterpiece of a CD -- if you can use that word for a compilation -- in some ways. This collection, while rather skimpy and sorely needing of remastering, is one of my favorite discs of all time.Taj Mahal is a bluesman to be sure, but his stuff is infected with reggae (Johnny Too Bad), calypso and other wonderful sounds of the islands. He is the happiest man in show business -- this really comes through in his later records and in live performances. While there are other places to start with Taj's catalog, this CD is very near and dear to my heart. Probably because of "Fishin' Blues" and "Ain't Gwine ..." -- two of his finest works. I would recommend this CD if you're looking for an inexpensive way to get a flavor for some early Taj Mahal. But given that there are only ten tracks of poor sound quality, my recommendation is of a personal and sentimental nature.
Good but there is better February 23, 2002 Don't buy this cd is it is very badly in need of remastering. There is another "Best of Taj Mahal Remastered" that has all these tracks plus more. The artist deserves a five here because he is an incredible blues man but the album sound quality is poor. Also recommend Take a Giant Step as it has a mix of electric blues as well as acoustic delta blues.

Tah Mahal is one of the best blues legends of all time. His vocals, blues harp, and guitar are the quintesessial of all blues players. I have been listening to him from 1970 the songs never get old. I hope he gets the recognition he richly deserves while he is still on the planet!
Some great tracks. November 10, 1998 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Some of the songs on this disc are absolutely fabulous, others are not quite as good. The first three (Leaving Trunk, She Caught the Katy and Fishing Blues) are huge. So's Chevrolet. Cakewalk is pretty good too. The others, however, are not what I look for when buying a blues album. In my mind this album's a mixed bag, as far as blues go. But the 4 or 5 standout tracks are definitely worth owning.
