5 out of 5 stars Great music from a legend!   February 8, 2001

I wasn't sure how much I'd like his spiritual music since I was a big fan of his early recordings on Original Rolling Stone. With the first listen, I was impressed and pleased! For a 75 year old man to still play guitar this well is something to appreciate. I totally agree with the previous review by "Front Porch Sitter" and could not describe it any better. --- NOTE: If you are a serious fan, please seek out "Robert Wilkins/Tom Dickson/Allen Shaw - Memphis Blues 1928-35" on Document Records. Although it has been reported that this CD contains only the same tracks as "Original Rolling Stone", it is incorrect. There are 3 tracks that are NOT on that CD and is definitely worth having!

5 out of 5 stars You can't get more soulfull than this   April 13, 2000

If you were lucky enough to stumble upon this page, I congratulate you. I first stumbled upon the songwriting of Rev Wilkins when I heard the Rolling Stones version of "Prodigal Son". I was instantly curious to hear his recordings. This album draws you into a simple, but very spiritual place and fills your heart with a tearfully happy peace. The Reverand's voice is very moving from the first track "Jesus said if you go" all the way through to the last track "In the Army of the Lord" (which happens to be a live track). His lyrics are rather simple, but reach right into your heart. An interesting track on the album is the nearly ten minute "Streamline 'Frisco Limited". In this track he uses his guitar to mimic the rhythm of a train and it's whistle blowing while he sings/tells a story. This collection of songs is both timeless and priceless. You can't find this type of music anymore. It is the sound of an old man that has seen many days pass playing his guitar on a front porch in the late afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Gospel Blues   August 13, 1999

Why the Rev. Robert Wilkins isn't well known is beyond me, as just about every piece of music I've heard by him has been of consistant high quality. These songs were recorded by Wilkins after he gave up the blues and became sanctified, but they still have that blues tinge to them. Excellent guitar playing and vocals. Also highly recommended is "The Original Rolling Stone" out on Yazoo, his blues sides recorded in the 20s and 30s. If you haven't heard The Rev, then discover him and enjoy!
