| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential recording This acoustic supergroup joined forces in the summer of 1988, and the result was a true landmark in "new acoustic" music. As if bluegrass (and even "newgrass") was too constricting, the quintet--Sam Bush (mandolin), Jerry Douglas (dobro), Bela Fleck (banjo), Mark O'Connor (violin), and Edgar Meyer (bass)--incorporates classical-style themes and arrangements within the context of bluegrass instrumentation. Their unbelievable technique and musical ability was never in question; however, what makes the album special is the uncanny blend of precision and freedom, of improvisation and structure. Each of the 10 compositions were written by a different twosome (do the math permutations). Playful bluesy lopes ("Pink Flamingo") accompany tinges of reggae ("The Locks of Dread"), Celtic ("Macedonia"), and Middle Eastern ("Blue Men of the Sahara") music. There are urgent burners, somber mood pieces, and tender ballads, all delivered with grace. --Marc Greilsamer

Can't Get Any Better November 23, 2008 This CD actually came out about 5 years ago and features some of Blue Grass' most talented instrumentalists. This CD has elements of Blue Grass, Jazz, and a touch of Fusion. In my mind, it doesn't get any better than this.
Outstanding October 31, 2008 If you like the Appalachian Journey, Short Trip Home or similar, this album will not disappoint. One of the best of its kind.
A FINE MODERN BLUEGRASS ALBUM June 1, 2008 A beautiful balanced acoustic album which seems that will never faint out throughout time .FLECK and his mates create a superb album loyal to musical values of integrity and honesty towards humanity .HARMONY AND MELODY ALTERNATE EQUALLY HERE.EXCELLENT.
Really is timeless April 3, 2008 This album was recommended to me by a coworker, who, having grown up in Tennessee, was always lamenting the Northern ignorance of all things bluegrass. I said I'd give this album a try, and was I ever surprised! Since I possess an utter lack of knowledge about Southern music, all I can say is that this is truly rockin' music. But this album has breadth, too. I occasionally find a piece of music that conjures vivid imagery in my mind; the last one being Paganini's "Caprice In C Minor" for solo violin. This album has one, too: "One Winter's Night" is a breathtakingly beautiful piece of music. Anyway, a great all-round album. If you like acoustic strings, get it!
Excellent March 30, 2008 If you like artists like Bela Fleck, you will LOVE this album. I wish Strength in Numbers had produced more albums together.
