Melodic, Driving, and Inspiring December 7, 2004 I first discovered BTG through their album "Like A Metaphor". It was such rich, melodic and intelligent music I felt a bit like I felt years ago when I had discovered Yes or The Hellecasters. In fact the comparison between BTG and these groups is apt: they share those aspects of being melodic, moving and just complex enough to enjoy more and more with repeated listening but also they are readily accessible at the first play. "Leap Day" is an earlier album but has the same level of musicianship that you will find on "Like A Metaphor". If you have previously enjoyed "Like A Meatphor" and wonder if this earlier effort will be worth the investment don't hesitate; it is a wonderful collection of both electric and acoustic guitar music. If you haven't previously purchased BTG buy Leap Day and Like A Metaphor, because neither will disappoint and it will allow you to hear the writing progress between 2 excellent albums.
awesome May 9, 2003 just got turned on to these guys at a festival in SF last summer.. great guitar music rock/jazz.. good variety on cd easy to listen too over and over.. also great as background music at a party or i listen to it in my shop... enjoy
Absolutely amazing! November 13, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you haven't heard these guys, you are missing out on some of the most amazing music ever! Their fusion of jazz, rock, blues, folk....is a great blend that will please everyone. It is great music for road trips and dinner parties, and perfect for Sunday mornings with a cup of coffee and the paper. I highly recommend a listen.
these guys are great! September 26, 2001 i have heard this band numerous times at street fairs in the san francisco bay area...in person they sound even better than they do on their cd's...their combined talent is overwealming. i cannot believe that they have not broken out of the local market. i don't know if anyone will even be reading this review or not, but if you happen to see this, and you have not heard this band, do yourself a favor and pick up one of their cd's. their version of 'take five' on their live album by the way is the best i think i have ever heard. their new album (this review) is outstanding. enough said. buy it and listen. jb
Fine music, positive style, excellent musicianship February 25, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Heard this group ... recently (Jan 2001), loved their playing. Bought the CD. I am deeply impressed by the production quality, the variety of textures in the various instruments, the cleverness, precision, and intricacy of some of the counterpoint. Although there is some of the school of: create-a-progression and solo over it - there are many places where the music is craftily arranged and rich counter-point occurs which I enjoy immensely. I feared that this CD might lapse into the Jazz Fusion realm, but they managed to steer away from that by having the guitars tend use short bursts of melodic ideas that are more interesting. It's as if texture, tasty, and precise ideas are sharply woven together rather than languid solos of show off playing. All the licks are directed to the musical piece and not at the audience to wow them with pyrotechnics. Bartron's "Confluence" clearly reflects the major influence of Steve Howe (The Clap) and Leo Kottke with a killer technique. Love the rhythm section on the tune with vocal (and the vocal is very nicely done, the song lyrics are meaningful without being sentimental). I'm a big sucker for that basso jungle thumping percussion on the piece. Makes ya move, gets in your bones! Everybody's got great chops. they did an outstanding job producing the CD in the studio. The sound quality and dynamics are top notch. I can't wait for their next CD. I pray they'll make some money off this one. There is great richness, variety, taste, and surprise (which is often missing from this category of music) in the pieces on the CD. Music that's fun to listen to carefully. Very rewarding to the ears.
