When soul music is at its finest, a great vocalist can take you along on a journey into their sadness, loneliness, joy, and passion. When mixing that voice with horns, harmonies, and a bluesy Hammond organ, that same music can seamlessly travel across decades. Many new artists claim to accomplish that feat, but few are sincerely ageless and timeless: Corinne Bailey Rae has those qualities in spades. Rae--a newcomer out of Leeds, UK, with a gospel choir history--has created a self-titled CD that occasionally evokes the feeling of a '70s Bill Withers classic, while bringing inflections of Zero 7 and Alicia Keys to her grooves as well. Straight from track one, "Like a Star" displays a restrained soulfulness that shows her strengths through a whisper soft melody. Other standout cuts include the breakup-ache of "Till It Happens To You" and "Choux Pastry Heart," which discloses her jazz-affected timing and the level of powerful songwriting that she is capable of at her very best. In a day and age where a good voice alone can provide you with a golden ticket, it is refreshing to see that Rae has not only written or cowritten every song on her debut, she also contributes guitar, bass, keys, and percussion to the tracks. Her songs have some room to mature, but as a new recording artist in her mid-20s, so does she. Soul lovers, pass the word: this is one impressive debut. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Debut Album   November 16, 2008
My favorite song by far on this album is "Put Your Record On," so catchy that its hard to shake out of your head. But I'll never dismiss the sweet melodies- "Like a Star" and "Till it Happens to You."
Her music truly is a unique blend of soul, pop, jazz with a sprinkling od sadness, heart-ache and lonliness much akin to the music of the the little-bit-edgier SS, Arrica Rose. Both singer-songwriters have a bit of jazzy Norah Jones plus a lovely, sweet and passionate sound all their own. This is Corrine's best album to date. Buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Smooth   November 13, 2008
A nice album to kick off a girl night's out, or a lazy sunday morning with a cup of joe; it's a Starbucks type of song collection targeted toward the uber liberal hoity toity crowd. I don't agree with the grammy nomination for this actress as I believe there are more far superior than her. I guess when you sing several nicely written songs and have a good pr campaigning for you, everything is possible.

5 out of 5 stars New Fan   October 21, 2008
One of my friends left Corinne's self-title album in my car a month ago and I haven't stopped listening to it everytime I drive anywhere. I'm an adoring new fan!

I had only heard 'Put Your Records On' and though I liked the song, quickly dismissed Corinne Bailey Rae as another top 40 1 hit wonder Starbucks neo-soul artist. Big mistake.
This is definitely one of the most inspiring albums I've heard in a while. The production knocks (lots of keys, clean guitar, horns) and her voice is distinct, unique, and honest. Add to the that thoughtful insightful songwriting and you have a Classic with a capital C.

This coming from someone who generally only listens to Kanye and 70's soul.

The CD is just alright. I only like a couple of the songs. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.
