Pure Velvet July 24, 1998 I had not heard of Ms Cassidy until two weeks ago when I read a very glowing review of her music in our local paper; which also stated that we had lost someone very special in Eva. I so agree. I will probably have to order another copy soon, as I have played it so many times in the few days that I have had it. Ms. Cassidy has left behind a marvelous legacy in her music. Thank you, Eva.
Breath-takingly beautiful July 23, 1998 From the first notes of "Fields of Gold" to the closing notes of "Over the Rainbow," this is a recording to treasure. No matter what material she chose -- and her range could be eclectic -- she always made it her own. And no matter how many times you may have heard "Autumn Leaves," she made it new and fresh. She could wail without losing her musicality and no one, but no one could caress a lyric like Eva Cassidy. Her passing has left a great ache but, thanks to a handful of recordings, not a complete void. The devotion she inspired from fans and other musicians tell you all you need to know about her as a person. "Songbird" tells you all you need to know about Eva Cassidy as an artist.
"I heard an angel sing - July 16, 1998 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
..my silver chord affirms this, a voice so sweet so pure, no crystal known could ring as clear, nor take the soul so far from earth, or all the pain upon it..." There's no doubt about it in my mind that Eva Cassidy would be a household word by now if it weren't for the fact she succumbed to cancer at age 33. She sings absolutely anything - yet always puts her own personal signature on it. Although I haven't heard _Songbird_ yet, I've got her other CD's, and after each first listen of "Live at Blue's Alley", "The Other Side", and "Eva By Heart", I wept, not only for the passing of a truly exceptional singer, or the truly beautiful person that Eva is, but for the utmost pleasure of hearing exquisite Truth and Beauty in Eva's voice. It's amazing to listen to a CD where every song could be Hit #1. I highly recommend any and all of her CD's. They've changed me. You MUST hear this Eva - this angel!
Dazzling, heart-breaking July 10, 1998 Music-lovers in the Washington, D.C., area have made Eva Cassidy's locally-distributed CDs into runaway bestsellers through word of mouth. This CD, "Songbird," contains some of the best music from her three other CDs. Eva's voice is dazzling, powerful, soulful, heart-breaking. The musicians in my area expected Eva to be a big star but cancer took her life before it could happen. It still could. Buy this CD. You'll never forget Eva Cassidy. (Sorry to sound like a commercial!)
The Best Singer You Never Heard Of July 7, 1998 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Maybe the best singer ever, Eva sings with extraordinary power, clarity, and emotional range. At times she sounds a bit like Roberta Flack but otherwise, I can't categorize her. No matter how many as you've heard "Over The Rainbow," Eva Cassidy makes it sound like a new song. The spare arrangements stay out of the way of the singing.
